Allergies occur when your immune system is triggered by a foreign substance known as an “allergen”, which can include certain types of food (e.g. cow’s milk), pollen, mold, dust mites, or animal dander. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.
Allergy symptoms vary from person to person depending on the type of allergy and how severe the allergy is. Common symptoms include: sneezing, itchy nose and eyes, hives, or swelling of the face. In some severe cases, allergies can lead to anaphylaxis – a life-threatening reaction.
An allergist/immunologist is a medical doctor who specializes in treating and managing allergies and other immune system disorders.
