Facial wrinkles are part of the normal process of aging. This continuous process begins when people reach their mid-20s. The skin is like an elastic band; when people smile their skin is stretched but when they are not smiling their skin can snap back into place. The skin can do this because of collagen and elastin. As people age their bodies do not make as much collagen, and elastin starts to lose its ability to snap back into place. Along with that the skin is like an elastic band, if left for a long period of time in the sun it will become damaged and will not be able to snap back to its original shape. This damage from the sun in combination with damage that builds up with age is what causes people to notice facial wrinkles earlier in life.
There are many different types of wrinkles that are seen on the face including crow’s feet lines and glabellar lines. Crow’s feet lines or “laugh lines” are the wrinkles that begin to form at the outside corners of the eye and glabellar lines or “frown lines” are the vertical wrinkles that form between the eyebrows.
Facial wrinkles can cause people to be unhappy with their physical appearance and because of this cosmetic treatments and procedures have become more popular. Facial wrinkles can be treated in different ways from facial skin creams to surgical procedures like facelifts.
While surgical procedures involve long recovery times and facial skin creams do not offer dramatic results, scientific research in the field of dermatology continues to make new treatment options for facial wrinkles.
